Keep only the essential elements

When looking for the first time at a site, visitors tend to make hasty judgements. If features widgets all over the place, they will not be impressed. It is important to rethink what you choose to include in the design of your online store. You should eliminate all the unimportant elements from the page and keep only those ones who are essential to your site. While everything seems essential, the truth is that you can do without some elements. Consider getting rid of very long texts, arrows or buttons that do not do anything but occupy space and provide zero functionality. Keep in mind the 80-20 rule. To be more precise, you should display only 20% of the elements that have 80% effects. The reality is that only 20% of your design choices actually affect users’ interaction.

Give readers the chance to read

A current practice of big names on the Internet is to crowd their pages with opportunities to click. This is, however, a mistake. If a great number of users land on your page at the same time, then there is a good chance that your website will crash or that some of them will be sent to another place via paid advertisement. You should avoid this practice at all costs. What you should do is give readers the opportunity to read your content. In this sense, the content on each page should be high quality, namely it should be readable. If it is written in language that is too hard to understand, you will lose a great many customers. Equally important is to place the content right above the fold because this is the place where users focus their attention first.

Avoid flashy colours

Ideally, your Internet page should have a monotone colour palette. 10 colours on only one page is too much. The rule of thumb is the following: less is more. 2 or 3 colours will improve your visual design, not to mention that they will put emphasis on your content. The call to action or the image will be more likely to grab the readers’ attention if there are no other elements standing out. This technique is at the same time simple and effective.
